TAPAC and the Golda Center

Ma Ze TAPAC?

TAPAC is the

  • Tel
  • Aviv
  • Performing
  • Arts
  • Center,
the Israeli Opera House.

TAPAC is a part of the Golda Center.
The Golda center also includes
  • the Tel Aviv Museum of Art,
  • the Cameri Theater,
  • Beit Ariela Libraries,
  • two office buildings, and
  • the Piazza connecting them all.

The location of the Golda Center is perfect, considering the names of the surrounding streets:

Naama Aaronson

An Exhibit of Papier Mache Sculptures by Naama Aaronson is currently displayed in the lobby of the office building that houses the Court House.

Each sculpture is an invitation to invent a tale.

The sculptor suggests that the largest installation, A Meal may remind one how young Amos Oz in The Tale of Love and Darkness watched the people around him in cafes where his parents were taking him, and created stories about them.

Asaf Lifshitz

This myspace gallery presents great many of Asaf Lifshitz's dynamic and witty sculptures.

An exhibit of his miniature sculptures is now on display in the lobby of the Opera House.

The Program

Kindertotenlieder

From over 400 Kindertotenlieder by Friedrich Ruckert, Mahler chose five for his song cycle, selecting those that focus on the idea of light.

It was an impressive and moving performance by Mezzo-soprano Edna Prochnik and the orchestra. The storm of the fifth song magically ends with appearance of light.

Duke Bluebeard's Castle

This is a magnificently put together performance of an one act opera with only two characters

  • the mysterious, sad, and lonesome Duke Bluebeard (bass-baritone) and
  • his latest young bride, Judith (soprano), who is in love with the Duke and is eager to dispell the darkness of the castle.

It is mostly in Hungarian(!) with some German.

The libretto is loosely based on the French fairy tale Bluebeard by Charles Perrault with an obviously altered ending.

The spectacular set of six glowing glass sculptures, one for each of the chambers with the locked doors, was created by Dale Chihuly.

  • A torture chamber, streaked with blood.
  • An armory, the weapons stained with blood.
  • A treasury.
  • A secret garden.
  • A view of Bluebeard's entire kingdom.
  • A lake of tears.
The orchestra sits on stage, behind the Chihuly's chambers.
