    March 26th, 2017

    ***

Upside down drawing of pictures from a shtetl - for the first two hours

    ***

At 12pm we drew girls in a hammock and girls in a boat.
Then we drew the peacock that stands on the deck.

    ***

    March 19th, 2017

    ***

Upside down drawing was the exercise of today for the first two hours

    ***

At 10am we placed an Henri Matisse drawing upside down and then copied it into our notebooks.
We also tried this on other rather complicated drawings

    ***

At 11am we did the same thing with some simple line drawings.

    ***

At 12pm we drew cartoonish KeyHole people.

    ***

    February 26th, 2017

    ***

At 10am we still were knitting/crocheting.

    ***

At 11am we travelled back in Italy, to Venice, to study the palaces on the canals.

    ***

    At 12pm we drew people.

    ***

    February 19th, 2017

    ***

At 10am and 11am we were learning how to knit/crochet.

    ***

At 12pm we drew pinguins, owls, parrots, hatched chicks,
    birdhouses surrounded by flowers

    ***

    February 12th, 2017

    ***

At 10am we started to learn how to create "soft Art" with use of knitting needles.

    ***

At 11am we drew the Tower of Pisa.
Called "La Torre di Pisa" in Italian, it is circular bell tower,
183 feet high, constructed of white marble.
It began leaning shortly after construction began in 1173
because the ground beneath the tower was soft.

    ***

At 12pm we learned to draw fruit and created a fruit bowl.

    ***

    February 5th, 2017

    ***

At 10am the desire to create more PomPoms was irresistible.

    ***

At 11am we went over many useful techniques of drawing.

    ***

At 12pm we drew bicycles, including edible(!) bicycles,
// tomato slices for wheels, asparagus for the frame, etc.\\
    prams with invisible babies,
    strollers with visible babies, and
    shopping carts,

    ***

    January 29th, 2017

    ***

Pom Poms are back in fashion and we have jumped into action
At 10am and 11 am we were busy creating Pom Poms!!

    ***

At 12pm we drew Madeline from the old house in Paris that was covered with vines,
We also tried our hand on the Little Bear

    ***

    January 22nd

    ***

    Our Annual Movie Day
at 10 AM The Little Princess (1993) which is loosely based upon
the novel A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
at 12 noon an animated film Little Bear, which is based on
the book series written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak
followed by Madeline a 1998 live-action film adaptation of the book series by Ludwig Bemelmans

    January 15th, 2017

    ***

At 10am we worked on still life (nature morte in French)
    starring rollerblades.

    ***

At 11 o'clock we drew rollerblades and bicyclists and
    learned the term concentric circles

    ***

At 12pm we drew a hammock hanging between two palm trees,
with the ocean as a backdrop and
sea turtles, shells, sun dollars, and star fish on the sand

    ***

    December 4th, 2016

    ***

The 10am Group designed fabulous dresses.

    ***

The 11 o'clock Group drew footware, including rollerblades.

    ***

The 12pm Group's horses eat, drink, run, gallop.
The sheep attempts to climb a tree.
    The flamingo stands motionless.

    ***

    November 25th, 2016

    ***

The 10am group dressed the fashion figures --- beautifully

    ***

The 11 o'clock Group learned some techniques to use when drawing fashion

    ***

The 12pm Group was busy turning

  • a ping pong ball, an egg, and an apple - into an elephant
  • two eggs and a ping pong ball - into a giraffe or a horse

    ***

  • November 18th, 2016

    ***

The 10am Group learned how to draw feet and designed some footware

    ***

The 11 o'clock Group concentrated on faces, hairdo, and real proportions of a human body
in order to get ready for
the fashion design for unreal impossible elongated bodies used in fashion industry.

    ***

    The 12pm Group enjoyed turning

  • an avocado - into a duck
  • two eggs and a ping pong ball - into a horse

    ***

  • November 13th, 2016

    ***

The 10am Group started working on Fashion Design.

    ***

The 11 o'clock Group learned how to create their own impossible objects.

    ***

The 12pm Group is busy turning

  • ice cream cones - into talking birds , or eating birds, or fish
  • kipot - into whales or turtles

    ***

  • November 6th, 2016

    ***

The 10am Group has mastered drawing human hands.
We shall work on Fashion Design next week.

    ***

The 11 o'clock Group drew more impossible objects...
We plan on even more optical illusions for the next week.

    ***

The 12pm Group drew lots of flowers.
We also made some amazing observations, for example, we can

  • draw a pomegranate upside down and TURN IT INTO a hot air balloon
  • use similar techniques to draw Babar elephants and bell flowers
  • take an ice cream cone and TURN IT INTO a fish

  • October 30th, 2016

    ***

The 10am Group started drawing human hands.
We shall work on this more next week.

The 11 o'clock Group drew impossible objects...
we love optical illusions and plan to master more.

    ***

The 12pm Group is learning to draw flowers

    School Year 2015-2016

Note: the new work had been added to the top of the stack.

    December 13th, 2015

    ***

The Advanced (10am-11am) worked on sculptures

    Moshe Rabeinu and Violin Duet

The 11 o'clock (Beginners) Group drew
    horses, giraffes, unicorns, ducks, birds...

The 12pm (VERY NEW Beginners) Group drew
parents pushing prams and also learned to draw ducks.

    December 6th, 2015

    ***

The Advanced (10am-11am) hour was about Corps de Ballet and Hobbies

The 11 o'clock (Beginners) Group drew
two hamburger buns side by side, each with two raisins on top
one became a frog, the other - a monkey.

The 12pm (VERY NEW Beginners) Group drew
children drawing on the board and children lighting chanukiyot

    November 29th, 2015

    ***

The Advanced Group worked on models of the Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, called "La Torre di Pisa" in Italian,
is circular bell tower, 183 feet high. It is constructed of white marble.
It began leaning shortly after construction began in 1173
because the ground beneath the tower was soft.

The VERY NEW Beginners Group drew

ballerinas, princesses (including a Spanish Infanta and an Italian Principessa), and malachim,

    The Well Established Beginners Group
    first drew people reading newspaper
then we quickly drew lions - for relaxation!

    November 15st, 2015

The Advanced Group is back to cartooning

here are the scenes at the airport, in a drawing class, at the tdsa siyum, in front of the ice cream shop

The VERY NEW Beginners Group started to draw people

a head has a shape of an egg
the eyes look like almonds, and we place them in the middle of the egg
the neck must be wide and sturdy to be able to hold the head
the iris is not a complete circle, the upper part of it we do not see
unless we are drawing a surpised person

    The Well Established Beginners Group
    was sculpting silver people

    November 8st, 2015

The Advanced Group took a break from the Key Hole People

    Instead we asked ourselves
    some very important questions
    about
presenting the 3D world on a 2D sheet of paper
    as well as about
    drawing things
that simply do not exist in the 3D world.
Thus we created optical illusion drawings.

    The VERY NEW Beginners Group

    drew an edible bicycle,
    with tomato slices as wheels.

We also drew lots of elephants
who were walking away from us...

Then we drew a friendly Lion

    The Well Established Beginners Group
    was drawing scenes with elephants

    November 1st, 2015

The Advanced Group drew a crowd of the Key Hole People

    The VERY NEW Beginners Group

learned how to draw a bicycle, a round table, and umbrellas
NOTE: the wheels of the bicycle we draw as circles
but the round table we draw as an oval
(its top looks like Chanukah gelt !)

We also drew a scene outside of an ice cream shop
with a bike parked in front, and a table with an umprella

    The Well Established Beginners Group
was drawing even more flowers today

    October 18th, 2015

The Advanced Group was drawing the Key Hole People
    to use for making cartoons

    The VERY NEW Beginners Group

we drew exactly the same shapes twice,
first - with a red marker
    and after that -
    with a green marker,
and look what we got there...

    That was
    before we started learning
how to draw the walls of Yerushalaim.

Today the Well Established Beginners Group
    was learning to draw flowers

    October 11th, 2015

    The Advanced Group did sculpting
using an unusual mixture of unusual media:

The VERY NEW Beginners Group started today
    with some food:
    ...and an ice cream cone
(that magically turns into a fish or birds!!!!!)
    and a pineapple and grapes

Today the Well Established Beginners Group
is celebrating a brand new baby --- born last night ---
    with these drawings:

    September 20th, 2015

The Advanced Group is drawing perspective
In the Library (3D) vs. In the Store (2D)

    The Beginners Group

    proportions of a human body
    are different at different ages

    drawing people
    - with correct proportions -
    as they are dancing,
    playing piano,
    standing,
    marching...

and here we were learning how to draw cat's eyes

    September 13th, 2015

The Advanced Group is learning about perspective
    Welcome, Shabbos Guests!
    today we were sketching...

    The Beginners Group

How to draw a human face?

we are getting so good at drawing faces!

and now we draw sages in Yerushalaim
(building on what we have learned so far)

    September 6th, 2015

The Beginners Group drew Ima im Tinoket

How to draw a human face?
    Where do we draw eyes?
Mom's head we draw as an egg.
    A hat? A sheitel? A tichel?

Baby's head is in the shape of a ping-pong ball.

    August 30th, 2015

The Advanced Group is still sculpting

  • Monkeys and Horses - using aluminum foil
  • Dancing Princesses - using paper napkins and foil

  • The Beginners Group drew the walls of Yerushalayim

how to make stones look weathered?
    how to draw arched gates?
the green moss growing between the stones?
the palm trees behind the city walls?

August 23rd, 2015 --- the First Sessions of the School Year

The new Advanced Group used Aluminum Foil to sculpt silver people

The new Beginners Group learned about lettering and created Name Plates

    While drawing overlapping letters
we made sure to draw only what we see

we also experimented with hairy letters,
    with or without wind blowing

    Some History in Pictures

    January 2014 - April 2015 ---- Beginners

(We started in the end of January 2014 and had a LONG summer break )

Note: the new work is added to the top of the stack.

    March 29th, 2015

Drawing Three Famous American Suspension Bridges

    1. The Golden Gate Bridge with its tall towers and four windows above the deck

    2. The Brooklyn Bridge, wide and solid, with two Gothic Arches

    3. The George Washington Bridge, with its iron lattice towers

    the cartoonish type

    February 15th, 2015

    Drawing animals,

    creating characters for cartoons

    February 8th, 2015

    Learning to Draw Flowers:

    1. when the "face" of the flower is not looking straight at you

the "face" is no longer round, it is an oval instead

    2. to draw a danderlion, we imagine short sun rays propagating radially

    3. when drawing a bouquet we are careful not to draw the shapes that we do not see

    January 25th, 2015

watching a movie on a big screen

Madeline, a 1998 film adaptation of the picture-book series by Ludwig Bemelmans

(of course, we drew Madeline afterwords)

How to draw a teenager or an eight year old ?

    It is all about proportions!

    How to draw an Elephant?

    how to draw
a cute bicyclist who is approaching you?
    a waiter carrying a tray?
a girl who is an avid reader?

    More Impossible Polygons
    and
    a few birds

    Learning about Algorithms
    and
    Creating an Optical illusion

How to draw Mother and the Baby, or Big Sister with the new sibling

    This really works!!!

    Of course, variations are encouraged

We also take into account the following:
an eye looks like an almond
the COMPLETE circular iris of an eye will express fear or surprise
the elbows are on the level of a waistline
the neck is wide and sturdy so it is able hold the head
hands often look as if they were in mittens

Drawing a person is all about correct proportions
and we are very good at that!
We looked at photos of the famous bronze statues
of Mrs. Mallard and her young'uns
from Robert McCloskey's book “Make Way for Ducklings”
They are in the Public Garden at Boston Common
Duck's body looks so much like a pear or an avocado,
and this is how we sketched ducks!

Learning how to draw a bike
we start with a sturdy wide letter M
    and add five circles
each pair of concentric circles make a wheel
    Here we are concentrating on
    drawing children
    who are
    . dancing .
    . skateboarding .
    . running .
. writing on the board .
    . walking .

today we draw easily recognizable images
A lion with a baby lion on the grass
    or
a performing lion in a circus

We used these little handmade dolls
    to convince ourselves
that human eyes are indeed rather low on a face.
Deep little hats come down to eyebrows,
and the face IS relatively small.

We also designed the outfits for the dolls.

We are drawing a human face.
    Where do the eyes go?
    How are they shaped?
A strong neck to support the head.
    Curls? Short Hair? Braids?
We are drawing the weathered walls
    of an ancient city
If this Palm Tree is behind the wall
we only draw the part that we see
We only draw what we see
If this Wall is behind the Tree
we only draw the part that we see

School Year 2014-2015 ---- Advanced Studies

    (The Third Year of Instructions)

Note: the new work is added to the top of the stack.

    Homage to Pablo Picasso

We are using the fragment of Picasso's
Two Acrobats --- Harlequin and his Companion, dated 1901
This fragment is cut out as a perfect circle

The task here is to concentrate on empty spaces
while putting together a copy of the composition

    how to draw
a bicyclist who is approaching you?
a reader who is absorbed into reading?

    IMPOSSIBLE OBJECTS and Curious Cats

    In the Jungle

    just one still life

This lemon-yellow summer squash with a slightly bent neck
    is called Crookneck Squash.

Looks more like five birds deep in conversation,
with the coriander seeds for eyes.

This is how we draw these "birds"

Line drawings of four different still life arrangements

Another exercise of today was studying
the famous bronze statues of Mrs. Mallard and her young'uns
from Robert McCloskey's book “Make Way for Ducklings”
Of course we were rather far from the Public Garden at Boston Common
    Nevertheless we easily determined that
duck's body looks so much like a pear or an avocado,
and this knowledge makes sketching a duck quick and easy

    Laya Is Designing New FONTS

Sitting Pretty with Dolls that We Made

(as we know, we always can make something out of nothing)

    Sculpting with Wire

once the general shape of an animal is constructed
it is fun to recognize which animal it is
and then to accentuate its characteristics
    • a llama with her elongated body
    • a camel with a hump
    • a giraffe with a long neck
    • a kangaroo standing on its big hind legs

    Pictures from a Shtetl

    we drew these upside down
    so that
we would be forced to draw WHAT WE SEE
and not what THINK that we see

We Are Drawing Cartoons with KeyHole People

    Seriously, We Are Working Here
    We are Totally Exhausted
    We Are Posing
    We Are Flying

We are learning from the masters

How to Draw a Hand ?

Of Course We CAN Draw Horses!

Some History: Beginners in 2007 and 2010

    The girls

    • draw abstract collections of straight and curved lines, and closed shapes
    • learn to draw recognizable images of a parrot, a monkey, a lion, a horse, a clown.
    • learn to sculpt "silver people" made of aluminum foil
    • learn to draw walls and buildings in an ancient city
    • draw kids of their own age --- rollerskating, jumping on a trampoline, reading a book, writing on the blackboard, playing the piano, running, riding a horse, taming a lion, sitting at the Shabbos table, dancing, riding a bike...
    • draw cute babies crawling, sitting, sleeping
    • learn to draw some well-known buildings and bridges
    • create collages

    About the Method

Our Affiliates in Ramat Shlomo, Jerusalem

This method is not about "artistic self-expression"

Instead, the emphasis is on development of visual perception:
It actually is very technical stuff:

    • these two lines run in parallel
    • this thick and that thin lines are running away from each other
    • the length of this is about twice the length of that
    • human eyes are in the middle of the head.
    • the elbows are at the level of the waistline
    • a fish looks like an ice cream cone with a fish tail

Our goal is to learn and internalize specific techniques and tools
    as well as to learn
    • how to concentrate
    • how to choose what to pay attention to
    • how to draw what we see, and not what we think we know
Learning to draw is as natural as
      • learning an alphabet and
      • utilizing it for reading and writing

After all, the letters of an alphabet are
simply abstract images, very much like
the curves, straight lines, and various shapes
used for representing the 3D objects of the real world
on a 2D sheet of paper

And yet no one expects illiterate people
to get busy expressing themselves in writing.
We all agree that learning the alphabet
      is the prerequisite!

At the same time, it is somehow expected that
one should be able to express oneself artistically.
No wonder many kids "drop out"
once they become critical of themselves
or in response to criticism of others.

Our method teaches the alphabet of drawing.

Making a mistake is fine as long as we learn from it:
    • "Oops, I messed up" is out
    • "Oops, I learned" is in

Use of mathematical terms is encouraged:

    • equilateral and isoceles triangles
    • parallel and perpendicular lines
    • circles and ellipses
    • congruent and similar shapes
    • symmetry
    • proportions...
    An ability to draw
can be developed in every child (or adult)
when the technical concepts of this method are
    • lucidly formulated,
    • clearly introduced,
    • pleasantly reinforced,
    • humorously repeated, and
    • frequently illustrated in various ways
